Operation: Drum Smoker
June 7, 2014
I have been interested in building a drum smoker since Big Poppa Smokers (www.bigpoppasmokers.com)came out with their Engineered Drum Smoker kit. I’m not the most “handy” guy when it comes to metalwork. – so I was intrigued by the concept of a kit – complete with templates and even a step bit for drilling.
I bought a used, food-grade drum locally and had it sandblasted. I then drilled per the included instructions with the templates provided, then had it powder coated. I installed the kit, coated the inside with grape seed oil, and did a burn-in. Overall, it was a fun and easy project. My only “regret” was not getting a new drum – used drums have dents and even my powder coating company managed to add a few dents. Not a huge deal.
I made a couple of updates over the original kit however: I added the work table on the front, got a set of GrillGrates for grilling, and drilled two small holes with silicone grommets so I could use my Maverick digital thermometer to monitor pit and food temps wirelessly.
